Sit back and Consign your Social Life to Taobao: Elephant Digest Vol.7

Issue 7
How Taobao can make you the Kardashians of Instagram:
a Curious Investigation

If Amazon is the Everything Store of the West, then Taobao, the retail vessel of Jack Ma’s Alibaba empire, is literally the”Beyond-Everything” Magic Land-

As long as you find the right entrance and dig hard, there’s nothing you couldn’t get, and believe me, even the wildest dreams could be made possible. (with some ¥¥¥ of course.)

Take, for example, becoming as liked as the Kardashians on Instagram.

Background: Click-Farming

(from: wiki)Sounds pretty handy? well, not so much anymore comparing to what you could get on Taobao, where China’s most creative, money-thirsting minds are at your service with an even lower cost. (Also, considering the fact that Instagram is censored in China, click-farming is just not very cost-efficient to operate.VPNs are expensive dude! )

From what I just checked today, Mrs. West Kardashians currently have 94M followers on Instagram. Her most recent post, a childhood family photo of her and the sisters, received over 1,170,000 likes so far.

Ready to make your number as shinny and excessive as hers?

First, let’s go to taobao.com and type in “ins粉丝” (fans) on the frontpage.

and B-O-O-M.

Pretty overwhelming huh? don’t worry,  we’ll walk through some of them together.

“Real and effective followers. If they run or drop we will catch them back.”

“5 yuan ($0.72) for 100 real human followers, 3 yuan ($0.43) for 100 foreigner Likes. The more you buy the cheaper we go.”

This one is obvious.

Yes, these shop’s colorful cover photos are all delivering similar messages/selling along similar price points. No, the services they provide are in fact much more flexible, diverse and, well, creative than you might have expected.

All of these Taobao shops can provide a wide range of services from follow, like, retweet, comment to video clicks. (if you get tired of high-famed online life and want to get rid of some followers, try talk to the shop owners too. I am sure they’ll find a way to get it done…)

∙ For each of these services, customers could further customize their needs based on:

1) Nationality.

Almost every shop provides “Chinese” and “Foreigners” options at least, and some go even further.

“American, Brazilian and Thai fans 4 yuan (¥ 0.58) for every 100; Dubai and Russian ones 5 yuan (¥ 0.72) /100.”

“Real Chinese/Korean/Japanese/European/US/Russian fans, customizable packages.”

Interestingly, Chinese fans tend to be more expensive than foreign ones in most of the cases. How come?

“2 yuan for 100 foreigners, 4 yuan for 100 Chinese.”

Well, this is where moneymakers on Taobao go truly more creative than traditional click-farming.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I please present you with our most privileged, luxurious service here-

Account consignation.

Zombies Are So Last-Century

By this time, I am sure you are all well aware that fans/followers/human-looking things on social networks are often not real humans but zombies.

In recent years, companies like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube have all came up with various detective mechanisms to fight against traffic frauds. Being a zombie is not as easy as the old days now, but thank god we still have the all-mighty, limitless Taobao.

As the above picture shows, when it comes to adding followers, Taobao sellers typically offer 3 tier of services based on different degrees of humanness.

1.”Normal Follower”:
-2 yuan ($0.29) for 100 followers
-Mostly with profile pics
-Not all accounts have posts
-Usually have followers

2. “Superior Follower”:
-3 yuan ($0.43) /100
-All have profile pics
-Most have posted things
-Usually have followers

3. “Human Follower”
-3 yuan ($ 0.67) /100
-All with real human profile pics
-Almost all have post things
-All have followers

Since no shop would explain how exactly their service operates, (I tried to ask two of them but both avoided the question) let’s take a guess-

Option 1 seems to be 100% zombie accounts.
Option 2 is a half-half;
option 3, which is also listed as “consigning accounts” in some shops, is achieved through 100% real, hot-blooded humans. (who are really using Instagram to post selfies, food shots and OOTDs. )

In other words-

“100% real humans.”

Consigning Your Social Life Like a BOSS

The process couldn’t be any easier.
You pay→PM the seller you ID and password→sit back and relax. That’s it.

“100 yuan ($14.4) per month: Account Consignation is different from traditional follower purchasing. By massively socializing your account, you will get fans who really like and self-willingly follow you.”

“3 days, 20 yuan ($2.89) real human follower/consign: we interact (Like and Comments) your account with other real accounts to attract followers, meanwhile you can still use your own account AS usual.”

This thoughtful seller even provided a Q&A:

How much effort would you spend on my account?
-We manually like and comment more than 1200 times for you everyday!

Is it safe?
-Of course! We will never leak your password, and your information will be deleted once the service ends.

Can I still log into my account during your working period?
-Yes, you can still use your account, but please don’t change your password!

Anything else?
Let me ask.

Me:
do I have to be careful with my post content during consignation? Any kind of photos I should or should not post?

Seller:
No restrictions, you can post whatever you want.

Wow. I mean, WOW.

Finally, with the power of the Internet and Taobao, I can sit back and watch someone else to do all the socializing for me. No more you-are-ugly-but-I-still-liked-your-selfie, or I-spend-30 min-to-choose-filters-but-still-get-no-followers. Seriously, can we get a real-life version of this service as well, PLEASE? (Yes I am talking to you, Mr.Ma!)

Finally, let’s calculate the exact cost to make you a Kardashian…

To become a member of the Kardashians, of course every service needs to be of the highest standard. So let’s pick the most expensive, real-human consignation package here-

6 yuan($0.87) for 100 followers. Assuming we are starting from scratch, to reach 94M followers it will take 564,000 yuan, which is $81568 by current CND/USD exchange rate.

(special thanks to Yan to help with the calculation-not all Asians are good at math you see…)

80,000 dollar to get you as many followers as a Kardashian, 100% human, no string attached. Sounds like a pretty good deal doesn’t it?

Welcome to Taobao.

Good luck and have fun climbing up to the top! Last but not least, just two things to remember:1. Don’t forget to leave your seller a good, 5-star review when the job is done. For Taobao operators, reviews are EVERYTHING.

2. Repeat repeat. Do not change your account password!
(Show some respect! your consigning agents are working hard under your profile pic to make people like you. Remember?  )
